We’ve said hello and how are you with our basic Italian greetings. What comes next when you are meeting someone new in Italy or making small talk at the coffee shop or hotel?
Come si chiama? = What is your name? (Formal)
KOH-meh see KYAH-mahCome ti chiami? = What is your name? (Informal)
KOH-meh tee KYAH-meeMi chiamo… = My name is….
mee KYAH-mohMio nome = My name is
ME-o NO-maySono… = I am…
SO-noPiacere = pleased to meet you
PEE-ah-chaireePiacere voi = please to meet YOU (in response)
PEE-ah-chairEE VOY
**Note: I just made a mistake recently with “mi chiamo” and made it feminine because I’m a girl. But the word is Chimare = To call and it conjugated to chiamo for the io = I pronoun.
**Note #2: Why do we use Come = How instead of Cosa = What? The translation is really How are you called? And Mi Chiamo is translated to I am called.
Hooray, we can now introduce ourselves to our new friends.
